Mosquito Control in Houston: What Actually Works
Adulticide is half the job. The other half is the larval source, and that is where most homeowners are getting it wrong.
Adults are the symptom
The mosquitoes biting you at dusk are the adult generation, and there is one adult for every larva in a breeding site somewhere on or near your property. Treating adults alone means you kill what is biting you tonight and the next wave arrives in three weeks. Treating the source means the wave does not come.
Finding the breeding sites
The dramatic containers — tires, buckets, a discarded pool — get all the attention. The real production happens in the boring places: a low spot along a fence line holding rainwater, a clogged gutter, an overturned pot, a birdbath, a tarp over a boat, and the saucer under a table. One neglected saucer is a full generation of mosquitoes.
Yard treatment vs barrier spray
A yard treatment covers the treated area with about three weeks of residual protection. A whole-property barrier treats the entire perimeter — fences, eaves, vegetation and entry points — which is what you need if you back onto a greenbelt, a bayou, or open land where mosquitoes migrate in from outside your control.
The timing question
Mosquito treatments need a dry window to adhere. If rain is in the forecast, rescheduling is worth more than treating anyway — a wash-off leaves you paying for nothing. We also time treatments around your outdoor plans, so a party or a birthday in the yard does not collide with the application.
